Notice regarding wireless LAN usage of “RICOH THETA X” camera; please refrain from using Client mode

Ricoh Company, Ltd., has confirmed a defect in the wireless LAN function of “RICOH THETA X” camera. Firmware upgrade to resolve this defect is targeted for mid-June 2023. We ask customers to use the device with the Access Point mode* instead of Client mode** until the upgraded firmware is released.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.

* Access Point mode: One-to-one connection with a smartphone or other device

** Client mode: A mode that allows a smartphone to connect to the RICOH THETA via a wireless LAN access point. Client mode is disabled by factory default.　By turning off the client mode, the device will automatically be operated in access point mode.

How to confirm and change setting

・Select the Client mode from the main unit menu screen and confirm that the setting is OFF, not ON.
・If the setting is ON, tap the ON/OFF button to switch to OFF setting. When the Client mode is disabled, the device will automatically switch to Access Point mode.

・The camera surface temperature at which thermal shutdown occurs has been changed. This change significantly extends the operating time of the camera.*1 The camera will be hotter than before, so do not touch the camera for a long time while the high temperature caution mark*2 is displayed to avoid burns.

*1: This change applies to cameras with serial numbers beginning with YR11, YR12, YR13, YR14, or YR15.

*2: High temperature caution mark

*3: Use a PD (Power Delivery) compatible USB cable to connect the camera to the power supply.

*4: There is a limit to the length of video that can be recorded per shooting. To record videos continuously, start shooting again when the video length reaches the limit.

・A new EV step “0.0EV” has been added for the function “AE Bracket” used to shoot multiple still images with different exposures for each image. Thank you very much for your continued interest and use of the RICOH THETA series.

We would like to announce that support to maintain, develop, and provide functions for the editing app for smartphone “THETA+” will end at the end of January 2023.

・If you have already downloaded the app, you can continue to use it on your smartphone even on and after February 1, 2023.

・In the meantime, you can still download the app.

・We have not yet decided when “THETA+” will no longer be available for download or when we will release a new service to replace the app.

■Background concerning the end of support

Ricoh will strengthen its “RICOH360” platform business with the aim of contributing to customer workflow DX (digital transformation) by providing user-friendly edge devices and related services in various types of industry and business. As part of this plan, we are focusing our resources on developing user-friendly apps and services.

A version update for the RICOH THETA app is now available.

＜App for computer＞

■RICOH THETA for Windows(R)／RICOH THETA for Mac

・Windows only
The certificate required for installation has been renewed. It is not updated automatically, so download and install it from the following URL.

・The blur correction function used when converting videos has been improved. It achieves high precision correction using the camera position information*¹ detected with the Visual SLAM technology. Select [Tool] → [Video conversion], and then select the [Blur correction] check box before starting the conversion process.

*¹ Relative position information based on self-position estimation (this is not position information from a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System))

* Videos shot with all RICOH THETA models are supported. Blur correction may not work depending on the shooting environment and conditions.

* Windows only
The Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime components (version 14.0 or later) are required for video conversion. If the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime is not installed, the installer will be displayed automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions to install it.

* Note that video conversion is not possible unless the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime is installed.

Microsoft and Visual C++ are registered trademarks or trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries.

・It is now possible to convert shot videos to “Route” and “Outside-in” videos and play them back. (This function is in the Beta (β) version.)

“Route conversion (β)”

For a video shot while moving, you can display the route you moved, and play it like a hyperlapse video to the selected point.

“Outside-in conversion (β)”

For a video shot while walking around the subject, you can view the subject from various directions like a frame-by-frame video.

* Videos shot with all RICOH THETA models are supported (excluding videos shot with the file size “1280 × 720”). Videos may not be converted depending on the shooting environment and conditions.

Notification of the release of a new RICOH THETA plug-in

Two types of new plug-ins (β version) only for RICOH THETA X were released. Both of these plug-ins assign the camera position information* detected with the Visual SLAM technology to 360° videos. This provides a new video experience in 360° that differs from conventional playback methods.

* Relative position information based on self-position estimation (this is not position information from a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System))

＜THETA Plug-in Application＞

■ Route Shooting BETA

You can use this plug-in to shoot 360° videos while moving. Playing back the shot video on the camera or app for computer displays the route that the camera moved. The video can be viewed like a 360° hyperlapse video from the start to the goal or up to a selected point. This allows spatial movement to be experienced vicariously as well as simulated, which is perfect for conveying a sense of space that cannot be fully communicated with photographs.

■ Outside-in Shooting BETA

You can use this plug-in to shoot 360° videos while moving in a full circle around a subject. Playing back the shot video on the camera or app for computer allows you to view the video frame-by-frame by swiping on the touch panel or operating a computer mouse. The subject is placed at the center and can be viewed from different directions. This is perfect for seeing the exact shape of an object.

* Videos may not be generated depending on the shooting environment and conditions.

・To improve security, the initial connection procedure has been changed for wireless connection between the camera and the basic app for smartphone. Follow the operating instructions displayed on the basic app for smartphone and on the camera to establish a connection.

* After upgrading the version, it is necessary to perform the connection procedure again even for cameras that have been connected with the basic app for smartphone in the past.

* Requires the latest version of the smartphone app (iOS 2.20.1 or above,Android2.5.3 or above).

・The “power saving priority” mode has been added as a default setting to reduce power consumption during wireless connection. To make the camera operate as before, select the “speed priority” mode in the new “wireless connection setting” function. Selecting the “power saving priority” mode makes the continuous operation time longer, and selecting the “speed priority” mode makes the image transfer speed faster. The camera must be restarted to change this setting.

・It is now possible to display shooting information such as the file number and shooting date and time on the playback screen for still images.

・The image quality of still images shot with HDR rendering has been improved.

Ricoh will release the “Hard Case TH-3” as a dedicated case for RICOH THETA on September 22.

[Features of “Hard Case TH-3”]

・This is a hard case that has waterproof performance equivalent to IPX4.^*1

・You can perform shooting with the case attached to the camera. The RICOH THETA smartphone app or the separately sold accessory “Remote Control TR-1” is used to release the camera shutter.^*2

・A USB cable can be connected with the case attached to the camera, enabling the camera to be charged and used for live streaming.^*3*4*5

・The case has a metal tripod screw hole.

Notification of firmware update for “RICOH THETA X“ camera.

■RICOH THETA X

・It is now possible to select “8K 10fps” and “8K 2fps” for the video size in the shooting settings.

* When playing an 8K video, use the basic app for computer (Windows/Mac). Playback is not possible using the camera or basic app for smartphone.・Improved shutter time lag.

・The live view previously operated at a frame rate of 30 fps. However, its default setting has been changed to the “Low power” mode which operates at 15 fps in order to reduce power consumption. This change improves battery life* from approx. 220 images to approx. 250 images. To operate the live view at a frame rate of 30 fps, select “High image quality” in the new “Live view setting” function.

* This figure is a guide based on Ricoh measurement methods, and differs according to usage conditions.

・The “Auto switching to live streaming” function was added. It is possible to select “On” or “Off” for this function. If this function is set to “On”, the camera automatically enters live streaming mode when the camera with the shooting screen displayed is connected to a computer with a USB cable. This function is set to “Off” by default.

* Set this function to “On” for UVC live streaming with the camera attached to the Hard Case TH-3.

・Some parts of the user interface have changed to make it easier to use.

・Stitching has been optimized when shooting underwater with the camera attached to the Underwater Housing TW-2. If you set the white balance to “Underwater”, the stitching will also switch to the one optimized for underwater shooting.

Main Features

• The waterproof mechanism consists of an O-ring and buckle while the housing has a metal tripod screw hole to allow you to fully enjoy shooting while diving underwater with peace of mind.

• The housing design has been improved to reduce scratches on the lens section by molding the lens section with a harder acrylic resin than was used on the previous product and applying a hard coating to the surface of the lens section. The housing also includes a dedicated lens cover that protects and wraps around the lenses.

• The shape of the housing body was designed to reduce the amount the camera itself appears in the shot images. Anti-reflective (AR) coating has been applied to the surface of the lens section to reduce reflections. The new functions of the plug-in are as follows.

＜THETA Plug-in Application＞

■HDRI Plug-in

This plug-in creates high dynamic range images (EXR) in the camera.

Normally, to create high dynamic range images (EXR), it was necessary to perform the lengthy process of shooting an image with the camera and then editing it on a PC before creating EXR data. The HDRI plug-in enables you to use only THETA to simply press the shutter button once to perform the process from shooting to image editing.

Created high dynamic range images contain information with a wide range of brightness difference. This allows you to use them for ambient lighting when creating CG and rendering, which enables you to reproduce shades of light so that it feels as though you are actually in the space where the image was taken.

A partial revision of the “Ordinance Concerning Terminal Facilities Etc.” came into force on April 1, 2020 based on the “Ministerial Ordinance for Partial Revision of Ordinance Concerning Terminal Facilities Etc. and Ordinance Concerning Chief Telecommunications Engineers” announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan to change IoT device security standards.

Due to this change, it is not possible to use functions via the client mode in plug-ins developed for “RICOH THETA Z1 51GB” sold by Ricoh in Japan (model with serial number starting from “YN35”). Developers who are creating plug-ins for “RICOH THETA Z1 51GB” should be aware of this fact.

The new model “RICOH THETA Z1 51GB” is an expanded built-in storage version of the top-end model “RICOH THETA Z1” that was launched in May 2019. The basic performance of the “RICOH THETA Z1” is kept as-is, allowing users to capture 360° still images and videos in excellent image quality, significantly expanding the storage capacity from 19 GB to 51 GB to meet the needs of the market, and ensuring that users do not have to worry about storage space. With this capacity, users can save approximately 900 RAW+ images or approximately 6,350 JPEG images on the camera itself.

The features of the predecessor model are carried on in this model, including a compact body and 1.0-type back-illuminated CMOS image sensor which makes it possible to record 360° high-quality still images equivalent to 23 million pixels (6720 × 3360 pixels). It features versatile shooting modes such as aperture priority shooting, allowing users to capture high-quality images in any type of shooting situation, including outdoor scenes and dark scenes. Also, the powerful rotational three-axis image stabilization function lets users record incredibly realistic, smooth 360° videos at 4K (3840 × 1920) and 30 fps equivalent.

JAXA and Ricoh release the 4th phase of 360-degree spherical still images captured in outer space

Ricoh has released today the 4th phase of 360-degree still images captured in outer space.

A compact spherical camera, jointly developed by JAXA and Ricoh based on the RICOH THETA camera, was sent to the International Space Station (ISS) on board “KOUNOTORI8”, a spacecraft used to resupply the space station. The camera was used to capture 360-degree still images and videos from an experimental platform outside the Japanese Experimental Module known as “KIBO”.

In addition to the videos released in the first batch on October 17, 2019, second batch on November 27, 2019, and third batch on March 2, 2020, a new video has been released in the fourth batch.

The fourth batch features a time-lapse video of images shot in the daytime across 15 orbits of the ISS around the Earth.
Enjoy the images of our beautiful Earth.

Captured spherical still images and video will be released in the JAXA Digital Archives (JDA), which is run by JAXA. These images and video will also be available from THETA LAB, a website run by Ricoh. You can view the images and video from any point of view you wish in all directions of 360° from this website in your web browser.

You can also simulate the experience of being in outer space by viewing these highly realistic spherical images using a VR headset.

Ricoh has released today the 3rd phase of 360-degree still images captured in outer space.

During this 3rd phase, three new still images have been added to the 1st phase of images and videos that were released on October 17 and the 2nd phase of images and videos that were released on November 27.

You can see the red desert of Saudi Arabia and the turquoise waters of Bahamas, a country elongated in the north and south.

You can also simulate the experience of being in outer space by viewing these highly realistic spherical images using a VR headset.

The iF International Forum Design, which is based in Hannover, Germany, is the longest-running independent design organization in the world. Each year, it selects outstanding designs and awards them with the “iF Design Award”.

The contest attracts many entries from all over the world, not just within Germany, and awards prizes for 7 categories which are Product, Packaging, Communication, Service Design/UX, Architecture, Interior Architecture and Professional Concept.

Ricoh has announced the release of the RICOH THETA SC2 for Business, a special model of the RICOH THETA SC2, an entry-level range of the RICOH THETA 360° camera series, designed for use in business situations.

This new product, RICOH THETA SC2 for Business, is equipped with the “Room” preset which enables shooting with HDR settings optimized for indoor shooting by taking into consideration the significant difference in brightness between the indoor and outdoor environment. When using the “Room” preset, the self-timer function can be used for shooting by applying Time Shift between the front lens and rear lens. With this preset, the RICOH THETA SC2 for Business is a convenient and easy-to-use model for customers who use RICOH THETA in business situations, such as real estate agents who often shoot indoors, and car salespersons who often shoot the interior of cars.

Ricoh has released today the 2nd phase of 360-degree still images and video captured in outer space.

During this 2nd phase, three new still images and one video have been added to the 1st phase of images and videos that were released on October 17.

The ISS takes about 90 minutes to complete a single orbit of the Earth. A time-lapse video was taken of images around the Earth for this 2nd phase. You can see how beautiful the Earth is as it rotates, including how clouds and the night appear on the Earth.

You can also simulate the experience of being in outer space by viewing these highly realistic spherical images using a VR headset.

Ricoh has announced the release of the new RICOH THETA SC2, an entry-level model of the RICOH THETA 360° camera series with simple operations and a variety of functions for easy use.

The RICOH THETA SC2 is an easy-to-use entry-level model in the RICOH THETA series, allowing anyone to capture high-quality spherical images easily. It is capable of capturing spherical 360° still images at the equivalent of approximately 14 megapixels, and smooth, immersive 360° spherical video at 30 fps (frames per second) in the equivalent of 4K (3840 x 1920 pixels). Additionally, the RICOH THETA SC2 comes with shooting modes such as “Face” mode, which recognizes human faces and applies skin smoothing, and “Night View” mode for shooting low-noise footage at night, which configure the camera for specific scenarios without requiring complex settings.

In addition to the status display OLED (Organic EL display) in the lower section of the body that allows at-a-glance checking of a range of information such as setting modes and battery power remaining, the RICOH THETA SC2 also features a new button that lets the user switch to self-timer mode, making the camera much easier to operate in a standalone manner. “Easy 360 for RICOH THETA” is an app for easy shooting, editing and sharing of 360-degree photos and videos.

JAXA and Ricoh release 360-degree spherical pictures and videos captured in outer space

TOKYO, Japan – October 17, 2019 – Ricoh Company, Ltd., (Tokyo, Japan) today announced that the 360-degree spherical camera jointly developed with The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully captured 360-degree spherical pictures and videos in outer space. The pictures and videos were released today.

The pictures and videos will be available via the JAXA Digital Archives (JDA). Also in Ricoh’s THETA LAB, the pictures and videos can be viewed as 360-degree images via a web browser. You can also simulate the experience of being in outer space using a VR headset.

Although we have provided functional additions and improvements on an ongoing basis to date, this update adds new Picture in Picture(PIP) editing and video crop editing functions, and also features social media function for displaying content posted to Instagram. We have also improved the user interface (UI) to make THETA+ easier to use.
The content of this update is as follows.

The UI has been completely revised to make it easier to use.

・ Picture in Picture(PIP) editing function
This function, which allows editing of videos using two screens has been updated, allowing a sub-screen to be overlaid on the main screen and edited.
The position and size of the sub-screen can be changed freely.

360-degree videos viewed while pinch-in/pinch-out or swipe operation are performed on a smartphone can now be recorded as is.

Ricoh was recently notified of a configuration issue related to unlisted images on the Theta360.com website and corrected it within hours. We can confirm that our immediate remediation measures are now complete. However, it is important to note that prior to remediation, unlisted images were not directly viewable. Someone would have needed the technical knowledge and the desire to locate the other components required to complete the URL providing access.

RICOH THETA Z1 has been chosen as an award winner for the prestigious European 2019 TIPA Photo & Imaging Awards.

TIPA is an independent, non-profit organization comprising the chief editors and technical editors of 30 photo and imaging magazines from 14 countries across five continents. TIPA also has a cooperative agreement with the Camera Journal Press Club of Japan.

This year, RICOH THETA Z1 achieved the highest evaluation score for the “BEST 360° CAMERA” category, and was chosen to receive this award.

23MP Raw and 4K Video
The Z1 sports two 1-inch type illuminated CMOS sensors with a maximum ISO of 6400. It can capture 23MP Raw stills and 4K/30p 360-degree video and features new image processing algorithms and capture support that includes a new HDR Rendering mode, an Interval Composite mode and a multi-bracket mode. Stills can be recorded in JPEG or Adobe DNG format, while video is enhanced via a 4-channel microphone for 360-degree spatial audio recording. An updated lens and an improved aperture mechanism, for three aperture settings, as well as 3-axis stabilization adds to this unique camera’s appeal.

“RICOH THETA Dream and Built Contest”, open-application competition for designer of new plug-in software for RICOH THETA will start. This competition is being created to encourage the development of new plug-in software.

As RICOH THETA V and the latest model RICOH THETA Z1 both incorporate an Android^TM based operating system (OS) enhance their expandability. Since they operate an application developed for use with Android models, users can more easily and flexibly customize camera operations, from business-oriented functions specific to particular industries, to unique, creative functions more focused on personal use.

The new contest invites software designers from around the world to apply their creativity in developing new plug-ins for RICOH THETA-series models.

The RICOH THETA V will be provided free of charge to the top 10 participants who don’t currently own a RICOH THETA-series model. Whether a user of a RICOH THETA-series model or not, every software designer is encouraged to join the contest and try out their ideas and design skills.

RICOH THETA Plug-in Partner Program (URL: https://api.ricoh/products/theta-plugin/), including development tools and support for members, has gone live. The program–initially announced in January 2018 and unique in the 360-degree/virtual reality camera industry–allows third-party developers to create their own Android-based plug-ins for the RICOH THETA V, a camera capable of capturing fully-spherical photos and 4K video.

The RICOH THETA V incorporates an Android-based operation system. Given its open architecture, the camera’s functionality can be further expanded by installing plug-ins.

As part of the program, Ricoh made available the RICOH THETA V application programming interface (API) and software-development kit (SDK) in April. Now, with the official start of the program, RICOH is providing additional resources for plug-in development. Once individuals sign up to become members of the RICOH THETA Plug-in Partner Program, they can access tools and online support. RICOH anticipates interest from developers in a variety of vertical markets to create plug-ins that will deliver customized functionality for the THETA V. Members can upload and share plug-ins on　the RICOH THETA Plug-in Store, which will open to consumers and businesses in July 2018.

TOKYO, April 19, 2018 – In advance of unveiling its overall RICOH THETA Plug-in Partner Program, Ricoh has released core assets that will enable Android developers to begin creating plug-ins immediately for the RICOH THETA V camera. These consist of an application program interface (API) and software development kit (SDK)–including a sample plug-in project–allowing third parties to develop plug-ins that add new features and functionality to the RICOH THETA V, Ricoh’s top-of-the-line camera capable of capturing fully-spherical, 360-degree photos and 4K video.

Based on the Android operating system, the RICOH THETA V provides a user-friendly way for third-parties to not only create apps and software that extend and enhance the capabilities of 360-degree imaging but also new features and functionality for the camera itself. ・We have found that a small portion of the Ricoh Theta V units exceeded the declared value for Radio wave output of WLAN (5GHz) for both US and Canada. Therefore, we have corrected the output values corresponding to these individual units via firmware update.

The RICOH THETA Plugin Partner Program will begin spring 2018.

This program supports development of plugins for adding functions to the RICOH THETA V.

The RICOH THETA V is based on the Android operating system,granting a high level of freedom in creating plugins and making it highly scalable.

Launching the Partner Program this spring enables us to release API/SDKs to participants,making it possible to develop a variety of plugins to customize the RICOH THETA V to suit user purposes.

The RICOH THETA V Upgrade Roadmap has been announced

Up until now, RICOH THETA V has upgraded its functions and performance through firmware updates and app updates. Today we would like to introduce an overview of planned updates which are coming over the next few months.

Also, some of the new plug-in functions currently being developed will be demonstrated at CES 2018. If you’re lucky enough to be in Las Vegas come and visit us the RICOH booth (No. 64704, South Plaza) from 9th – 12th January.

Notification of firmware update for “RICOH THETA V” camera.
We recommend updating to the newest firmware version that includes additional functions and product improvements.

■RICOH THETA V
・Added a function to correct rotational shake when shooting video.（When transferring to a smartphone with zenith correction turned on）
・Subject shake when shooting video has been reduced.
　*Noise may increase depending on the shooting conditions.
・Purple fringing has been reduced.
・Resolved the problem that weakened the spatial audio effect when recording with the 3D microphone (TA-1).
・Changed the default time until auto-shutdown from 48 hours to 18 hours.

*The firmware upgrade for the wireless LAN client mode that was scheduled for 2017 has been postponed until spring 2018.
